This episode starts out just as on Pokémon Red and Blue, and then it becomes color and has the same feel and music of the Pokémon game. Then as the camera zooms out a bit, you see that Ash Ketchum is watching TV.
His mother then comes in and tells him to go to bed but since he was so excited, his mother put on a TV Show about the next day when he begins his Pokémon adventure.
Ash has dreams of having each of the three starters but unfortunately he over sleeps. He races to Professor Oak’s lab late in his pajamas.
He meets Gary and his fan club. After a chat, Gary leaves.
Then Professor Oak appears. Ash first chooses Squirtle but someone has already taken it. Then Bulbasaur but it is not there either. Then he chooses Charmander but again it is not there. Professor Oak says there is one Pokémon left, which happens to be Pikachu. Professor Oak gives Ash Pikachu, Pokéballs, and a Pokédex. He soon finds that Pikachu has a shocking personality.
Ash meets his mom and a crowd of people outside. After embarrassing him, she notices Pikachu. She asks if Pikachu should be inside the Pokéball; when Ash tries to put Pikachu in its Pokéball, Pikachu bounces it back at him. Ash's Mom thinks they are playing catch. Then Ash’s mom says Pikachu is a bit weird which upsets it. Therefore, it shocks the entire crowd of People. Professor Oak explains that the rubber Gloves his mom packed would come in handy because rubber does not conduct electricity.
On Route 1, Ash is wearing rubber gloves and getting Pikachu to move by a rope. Then Ash tries to make Pikachu happy by getting rid of them but it is not good enough. He pulls out Dexter, which states that Pokémon should be in Pokéballs. Ash says Pikachu should too. Then Pikachu hits a button, and Dexter states that there are many exceptions.
Ash spots a wild Pidgey that according to Dexter is perfect for beginning trainers but Pikachu would not help him and goes up a tree. Ash tries to catch Pidgey with a Pokéball but he fails and Pidgey gets away. Ash says “I blew it” and Pikachu starts to laugh. Dexter then states that generally you must weaken a Pokémon by sending one of your Pokémon into battle before it can be caught. Ash says, “Now he tells me,” and Pikachu gets a good laugh. Ash tries again with another Pidgey by using his pajamas and attacked by Pigdey’s gust and sand attack. Pikachu again laughs at this.
Then, a wild Rattata steals food from Ash’s backpack. Dexter states Rattata lives in the forest but sometimes comes out to open fields to steal food from stupid travelers. Then ash says, “That means I’m stupid.” Pikachu gets a good laugh again. Ash spots three other Pidgey, then he throws a rock at them and they fly off.
Finally, he spots another Pokémon, which he mistakes, a Pidgey and manages to hit it on the head with a rock. Big mistake, it turns out to be a Spearow, which according to Dexter has a very bad attitude and will sometimes attack humans and Pokémon. It pecks him on the head and then goes after Pikachu. Dexter then states that Wild Pokémon may sometimes be jealous of trained Pokémon.
After Spearow attacks Pikachu a few times, Pikachu uses thundershock on Spearow. Spearow being shocked calls for help and a swarm of Spearow appear. Ash and Pikachu then run away while being pecked at furiously. Then end up falling in a river and go by a Magikarp and Gyarados.
Then we see Misty, who is fishing. She hooks Ash and Pikachu thinking a big one bit. Misty sees Pikachu and tells Ash it needs to be examined by a doctor and tells him that there is a Medical Center for Pokémon several miles away. Then the swarm of Spearow reappears. Ash borrows Misty’s bike and rides away telling her he will give it back to him some day. It suddenly starts raining and Ash hits a bump; Pikachu and Ash then fall off the bicycle.
Ash tells Pikachu to go inside its Pokéball and it might be safe. Then Ash stands up to the Spearow and makes a short speech ending with “Come and get me.” Pikachu sees that Ash is about to be beaten up to defend it. Therefore, Pikachu runs and jumps onto and off Ash’s shoulder and uses Thundershock on the Spearow. After the rain, stops Ash and Pikachu are lying on the ground. A ho-oh passes by overhead. Dexter says there is no data and many Pokémon are yet to be discovered.
